Refillable packaging for perfumery: The solution your clients will be asking for

Text    Refillable packaging has become one of the strongest trends in the perfumery sector heading into 2026. This isn't a passing fad: leading brands are already incorporating it into their lines, European sustainability and waste-reduction regulations are pushing directly in this direction, and end consumers increasingly value refillable products over single-use ones.

If you work in fragrance development or manage packaging for a perfumery brand, it's very likely that this demand will land on your desk sooner than you think. And when it does, the question won't be "should we do a refillable bottle?" but "how do we do it right?"
.

Why refillable is already a strategic priority

Interest in refillable systems responds to several factors converging at the same time:

•    Regulatory pressure: European packaging and waste legislation is moving toward reducing single-use plastic and actively promoting reusable formats.

•    Consumer demand: mid-to-high-end perfumery buyers increasingly associate refillable packaging with responsible brands and higher perceived value.

•    Brand differentiation: offering a well-executed refillable system is a direct way to position a product in the premium segment.

•    Customer loyalty: a bottle that gets refilled is a bottle the customer keeps, repurchases, and associates with the brand long-term.

Perfumery companies that get ahead of this shift, rather than reacting once it's too late, will have a clear competitive advantage.

The key isn't the bottle: It's the accessories

One of the most common mistakes when planning a refillable project is putting all the design effort into the bottle itself. In reality, the element that determines whether a refillable system works — both technically and aesthetically — is the accessories: the pump, the collar, and the closure system.

The most widespread system in mid-to-high-end perfumery works like this:

1.    Instead of a permanently crimped pump (the conventional system, designed for single use), a threaded pump is used.

2.    The pump screws onto the bottle neck and seals hermetically, guaranteeing the same tightness as a traditional closure.

3.    Once the bottle is empty, the pump is removed, the bottle is refilled through the neck, and the pump is screwed back on.

4.    The decorative collar is built into the pump itself, so once assembled, the final result is visually indistinguishable from a conventional, non-refillable bottle.

This last point is what separates a well-executed refillable project from one that looks the part: the end customer should perceive no loss of aesthetic quality from the fact that the bottle is refillable.

What to consider when designing a refillable project

Before jumping into designing a refillable bottle, there are several technical aspects worth getting right from the start, since they directly affect the final result:

•    Thread compatibility: the diameter and thread pitch of the bottle neck must exactly match the selected threaded pump.

•    Sealing performance: the closure system must guarantee the same leak resistance as a crimped pump, especially for travel formats or export.

•    Collar finish: since it's built into the pump, the collar must be manufactured to the same finish quality (chrome, lacquer, screen printing) as the rest of the product line to maintain visual consistency.

•    Resistance to repeated disassembly: the mechanism must withstand multiple open-close cycles without losing effectiveness or appearance.

These are exactly the details that need to be defined at the design stage, not afterward. Planning the refillable system from the start of the project avoids redesigns, extra costs, and production delays.

How we handle refillable projects at Ataviance

At Ataviance we manufacture packaging accessories for perfumery and spirits, both as standalone components and full sets, and we work exclusively with B2B clients in the fragrance sector who need a partner capable of managing packaging from end to end.

When a client brings us a refillable project, the first thing we do is review the design before it goes into production: validating thread compatibility, the sealing system, and the collar finish, so the final result meets the aesthetic and functional standards expected in the mid-to-high-end segment.

Have a refillable project on the table?

If your brand is considering adding a refillable system to its perfumery line, the best time to resolve the technical questions is before the design phase, not during production.

Get in touch and let's talk about your project before you design it.
